Better to Just Get High

According to the Wikipedia article Caning in Singapore, persons commiting “piracy” or “rape” are subject to the same number of lashings: “at least 12.” Piracy charges are similarly proportioned in the United States. It’s nice to know Singapore takes intellectual property seriously.

Interestingly, “trafficking in arms” will earn you “at least 6” lashings.

I can’t tell if you’re joking or not.  The penal code in question is clearly referring to the theft of ships rather then software.    Judging from recent news articles Singapore has been cracking down on businesses commiting software piracy, but I can find no mention of canings for those.

  2. Heheh. I wondered about that, but the idea of piracy on the high seas seemed so ridculous that I didn’t bother to check the laws.

No, I was incorrectly referring to software piracy. Oh well.
